Live Theatre Serves Up A Sizzling Summer Line-up
Live Theatre is set for summer with a scorching line-up of shows including Mixtape Summer Sizzlers, exclusive Edinburgh Festival Fringe Previews featuring Biscuit of Destiny by John Hegley, Almost Famous by Rachel Jackson, Fat Chance by Rachel Stockdale, Muff Said by Your Aunt Fanny and The Silent Treatment by Sarah-Louise Young as well as a live fun family show, Fables At The Kitchen Table.
The Summer selection opens with the infamous cult comedy music quiz show Mixtape which returns on Friday 15 and Saturday 16 July with a red-hot summer special. Mixtape Summer Sizzlers is not your average show – it’s a mix of edge-of-your seat comedy, theatre and everyone’s favourite part of the pub quiz, the music round. Using only song lyrics, the Mixtapers perform comedy sketches as players battle it out in teams to try and guess the tracks that inspired the sketches, and win themselves the highly coveted Golden Mixtape.
With non-stop hits from across the decades and genres, this ‘quizissential’ summer edition of Mixtape is guaranteed to get audiences head scratching, dancing and singing along. There’s also a chance for players to scoop a prize for best team name and best fancy dress, inspired by summer sounds, music icons and festival party dress.
Audiences can catch a first look at shows heading to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe starting with poet and comedian John Hegley’s Biscuit of Destiny on Wednesday 20 July. This celebratory jamboree is chock-full of daft and deft wordplay, sing-along numbers, a selection of drawings and other curiosities. The collection weaves gentle fiction and fanciful meanderings around the letters or romantic poet John Keats, to reflect on the ordinary business of living and the wellspring of creativity and love.
Almost Famous by award winning Scottish comedian Rachel Jackson on Thursday 21 July, is a new wet your pants funny show about the times she thought she was so damn close…The Rock tweeted her three times ffs!
The riotous all-womxn theatre company, Your Aunt Fanny return to Live Theatre on Friday 22 July with their latest offering Muff Said, a comedy sketch show that vividly captures a night on the town with your wildest, oldest, filthiest friend.
Rachel Stockdale’s funny, politically powerful one-woman play, Fat Chance shows Friday 22 and Saturday 23 July. Meet Rachel – a 20-something actress from Boro whose true life experience of weight gain from size 8 to 18 takes us from audition nerves and throwaway comments to literally breaking a leg! Perfect for anyone who’s ever put on or lost weight, had free school meals and who feels they don’t fit.
In the final Edinburgh Fringe preview The Silent Treatment by Sarah-Louise Young on Saturday 23 July, a singer loses her voice and embarks on an unexpected journey of self-revelation. Based on a true story, this is an intimate, funny, uplifting new solo show from the creator of An Evening With Kate Bush and Julie Madly Deeply.
Families are also in for a treat this summer, with Fables At The Kitchen Table on Saturday 30 and Sunday 31 July.
