The Unicorn production will then go on a national tour, travelling to Theatre by the Lake (Keswick), Edinburgh International Children's Festival (Edinburgh), Live Theatre (Newcastle) on Tue 9 Jun and The Egg (Bath), deepening the Unicorn’s commitment, as the UK’s leading theatre for young audiences, to connecting as many children as possible around the country with excellent artistic experiences.

Poor Effy. Sent to live with her aunt and uncle in a block that won’t allow dogs. What’s a girl to do? She smuggles her furry friend in, of course. Keeps him under a blanket. Feeds him biscuits. Ssh Toto, quiet. But it can’t last forever. Effy needs saving. And Toto is up to the task.
Tim Crouch returns to the Unicorn with his signature blend of thought-provoking and experimental theatre, in this powerful play about listening, friendship and finding hope in the darkest of places. Wearing headphones, the audience will experience Effy’s world through 3D binaural audio technology. Immerse yourself in a compelling live mix of sound and action, and discover the sound of things you never knew had sounds…
Tim Crouch, writer and director, said, “I'm overjoyed to have been given the chance to revisit this play. Every new performance in theatre is a revival of its own but this is major: two new brilliant actors bringing fresh life to the story of the girl and her dog. I can’t wait to share it with a 2026 audience.”
Rachel Bagshaw, Artistic Director and Co-CEO of the Unicorn Theatre, said, “I’m so excited to welcome back Tim Crouch’s searing exploration of love, hope, friendship and resilience to the Unicorn, with a standout cast and creative team of new and returning faces. Tim’s work always has a remarkable ability to explore our complex world through exquisite storytelling, creating space for young audiences to engage with big themes that may be challenging but that reflect the lived experiences of many children today. By extending our reach beyond London, we continue in our mission to make our work as accessible as possible and to offer vital first encounters with theatre for children nationwide.”
The Unicorn has partnered with Place2Be, one of the UK’s leading children and young people’s mental health charities, drawing on their expertise to develop audience care resources for this production and provide families and schools with practical tools to engage with the production’s themes.
This tour is made possible with the support of Arts Council England, helping to bring this work to young audiences nationwide. Tickets are on sale now.
