A red hot line-up of shows this Summer at Live Theatre

Live Theatre has a sizzling line-up of shows for summer 2024 featuring exclusive comedy previews ahead of the Edinburgh Fringe, the grand slam All White Everything But Me, sleight of hand with This Is Not A Magic Show, hard-hitting musical comedy We’re Not Going Back and glitter fueled feel good queer cabaret with All You Need Is Love.
First up is Kemi-Bo Jacobs’ award winning debut play All White Everything But Me from Wednesday 3 to Saturday 6 July. Inspired by the remarkable life of tennis player Althea Gibson, the first black person to win Wimbledon in 1957, this match winning and smartly written production is energetically performed and enthralling.
This Is Not A Magic Show by Vincent Gambini is a critically acclaimed and spellbinding performance of and about sleight-of-hand magic, its invisible mechanics and what it tells us about theatre and make-believe. Wowing audiences from Friday 5 to Sunday 7 July, it is part performance-lecture, part deconstructed showbiz and part magic tricks.
We’re Not Going Back by Boff Whalley, co-founder of band Chumbwamba, set during the ’84 Miners’ Strike, tackles the resilience of working class communities, the make-and-mend fabric of family and the power of sticking two fingers up to a government hell-bent on destruction. Playing from Friday 12 to Sunday 14 July Red Ladder Theatre Company deliver with humour, song and a six-pack of Babycham.
The Edinburgh Festival Fringe previews present some of the most exciting companies and artists previewing their shows ahead of Europe’s biggest arts festival – a fabulous opportunity for comedy fans to see them in Newcastle before they go stratospheric!
Athens of the North, written and performed by Mark Hannah and directed by Fraser Scott on Friday 19 July, is a new play exploring the people that make up the fabric of the city of Edinburgh, through humanity, love, loss and family.
Tom Lawrinson’s ridiculously entertaining show about family and growing up in a Spanish subterranean cave, Buried Alive (and loving it) previews on Wednesday 24 July. An unusual origin story from an unusual stand up comedian.
On Monday 29 July Larry Dean: Work in progress will see the three-time Edinburgh Comedy Award nominee try out some new jokes! This master of stand up, will join loveable oddball Alex Redman, prior to the main show for an exclusive evening of chat and candid questions. Dean has been seen and heard on Live at the Apollo, Mock the Week, Michael Mcintyre’s Big Show and Shared Baggage.
Luca Rutherford will be taking You Heard Me to the Edinburgh Fringe this summer but you can catch her show Luca Rutherford’s Political Party at Live Theatre before she heads North of the border. On Thursday 18 July join Luca in her attempt to get playful with the seriousness of figuring out what’s going on, how we got to this point and where we go from her! There will be music, dancing and eggs. No suits, No know-it-alls. No big words.
Direct from Newcastle’s vibrant LGBTQ+ cabaret scene All You Need Is Love on Friday 26 July brings stunning performances from pocket rocket Costa Fortune, dancing diva Cherri Bomb, singer/songwriter MXYM, voguing diva Chai Tea and the absurdly camp Love Deluxe Erotica. Hosted by wannabe popstar Bonnie Love and singing sweetheart Gloria Love.
