Sizzling Summer Shows and family fun at Live Theatre
Live Theatre’s scorching summer line-up continues with a chance to catch exclusive Edinburgh Festival Fringe previews featuring Piece Of Work by James Rowland, John Hegley’s The Early Word, 52 Monologues for Young Transsexuals by Nothing More to Say and Bitter Lemons by Lucy Hayes. Plus families with children over five years of age, can enjoy Story Inventors workshops on Wednesdays in August.
The Edinburgh Festival Fringe previews present some of the most exciting companies and artists previewing their shows ahead of Europe’s biggest arts festival – a fabulous opportunity to see them in Newcastle before they go stratospheric! Opening on Friday 21 July is James Rowland’s Piece Of Work, an account of a remarkable roadtrip that will delight and surprise. Through music, song and story the acclaimed storyteller, writer and performer will paint a picture of our country in all of its beauty, grime, pain and kindness.
Returning to Live Theatre for a second consecutive year on Tuesday 25 July is the hilarious John Hegley with a new premiere, The Early Word. Audiences can expect many animals – appearing in poems, songs and drawings, an alphabet of things the ancient Romans might have had and there is new light shed on family members. Perfect for those enamoured with dogs, spuds and a warmly interactive coexistence.
On Thursday 27 July, Nothing More To Say present 52 Monologues for Young Transsexuals. With killer dance moves, a fever dream of gut wrenching confession, this award-nominated debut is an hour of verbatim and cabaret theatre.
The final Edinburgh Fringe preview on Friday 28 July is Bitter Lemons by Lucy Hayes. Winner of a Pleasance Edinburgh National Partnership Award and supported by Bristol Old Vic, Bitter Lemons is an explosive debut play, set in the worlds of football and finance, tackling the pressures on women’s bodies and the power society holds on them.
Families are also in for a fun-filled treat this summer with Story Inventors workshops, perfect for those aged over five. A part of Newcastle NE1’s Summer In The City programme, these free workshops will let imaginations run wild with a session filled with games and adventures as they create a unique story. Running Wednesday 2, 9 and 16 August at 10am and 11 am Story Inventors is an entertaining way to get those creative juices flowing during the holidays.
