Summery Tales Family Festival Celebrates Live Tales Turning Ten
Live Theatre’s children’s fun and fantastic story and playwriting programme Live Tales has reached its 10th birthday! To mark this memorable milestone, the Quayside theatre is holding a party, Summery Tales in the beautiful Live Garden on Saturday 1 August from 11am to 3pm and everyone is invited!
There’ll be loads to see and do for all the family including live music, face painting and illustration and story writing workshops. In the lovely outdoor space will also be pop up stalls, craft stations plus a food stall and bar.
Summery Tales is a free event and open to all, but the workshops must be booked in advance to secure a slot. The exciting workshop programme, supported by Space Architects kicks off at 11am with Art-K Watercolour Creatures. This watercolour workshop delivered by art-K Jesmond is inspired by the magic of stories and will be repeated at 11.50am, 12.40pm and 1.30pm.
Story Time With Arti, an interactive storytelling adventure led by author Danielle Slade and inspired by her book TWINKLE TWINKLE Arti. Using her magical storytelling suitcase, Danielle will bring the story to life before inviting children to get creative with a fun, star themed craft activity at 11.45am and again at 1.30pm.
Story Inventors at 12.15pm is a playful and fun story making adventure working with costumes, props and puppets to collaboratively create a brand-new story.
Live Illustrating at 2pm is an interactive illustration workshop led by a team of talented Live Tales illustrators. Creativity will abound as characters and new worlds are invented through the brilliance of drawing.
The world of Live Tales allows children to embrace creativity as worlds are built, characters come to life and ideas spark excitement. An invaluable and unique opportunity for exploring and original thinking, discovering voices and building confidence over the decade Live Tales’ facilitators have worked with thousands of schoolchildren and brought imaginations to life.

As we mark this exciting milestone, we're not only continuing our much-loved schools programme but also expanding our focus to welcome more families into the world of Live Tales. Our Family Festival is the first step in bringing Live Tales to an even wider audience, kicking off what we hope will be another incredible decade of creativity and storytelling. If the first 10 years are anything to go by, who knows what we'll be celebrating when we reach 20!”
Summery Tales is just one of a series of amazing Live Tales Turns Ten events for families and there is more to come. In Autumn Spooky Tales on Wednesday 28, Thursday 29 and Friday 30 October promises a spine-tingling story making adventure – full of laughs, gasps and a sprinkling of magic. The celebrations culminate in the perfect festive family outing, Where Do All The Kittiwakes Go At Christmas? from Saturday 19 to Thursday 31 December. Supported by Gillian Dickinson Trust, this alternative Christmas play with music, interaction, bold adventures and captivating storytelling will have all the family squawking with laughter.
