About Curious Arts

Curious Arts is a North East based charity developing LGBTQIA+ arts, artists and communities across the region.

Producers of award-winning Curious Festival - a celebration of LGBTQIA+ culture, Curious Arts co-ordinate queer arts network, Queer Arts North and develop community-focused arts projects and events throughout the year, in partnership with cultural and community organisations from across the region.

David Hoyle

David Hoyle

David Hoyle rose to fame in the 1990s as the Divine David, an anti-drag queen known for his biting social commentary on bourgeois Britain and the gay scene, mixed with self-recrimination and shock tactics. After ending the Divine David persona in 2000, he returned to performing under his own name, bringing his sharp satire and charismatic stage presence to venues like the Royal Vauxhall Tavern, Soho Theatre, and Tate Britain.

Hoyle’s recent work includes the stage shows 'Diamond' and 'Ten Commandments', and he continues to tour internationally. In 2024, Aviva Studios in Manchester held a three-week retrospective of his career titled 'Please Feel Free to Ignore My Work'.

Mama Rhi

Mama Rhi is a cabaret artist that makes predominantly, feminist lip sync and burlesque performances that delve into themes surrounding body acceptance, female sexuality and joyous celebrations of love. Her work is satirically sexy, rebellious and mischievous with a wicked sense of humour. Described by audience members as the “Ultimate source of gay panic”.

Sweet Boy is a vibrant drag artist who blends the whimsical charm of clowns, the playful energy of cartoons, and the thrilling edge of horror into one performance. You can never know what to expect, but you can be sure to enjoy yourself.

WhatsApp Ross & Johnny the Biblical Rapper

WhatsApp Ross & Johnny the Biblical Rapper (Rosa Postlethwaite & Tessa Parr)

Rosa Postlethwaite (she/they) is a Newcastle upon Tyne-based performance artist. They work across live art, dance, socially engaged art and theatre.

WhatApp Ross is Johnny’s mate. He’s basically Rosa with bigger eyebrows.

Tessa Parr is an actor and theatre maker with a background in visual arts.
She is a core collaborator with Leeds Contemporary dance Co, Glitterbomb Dancers.

Johnny is a right laugh if you get him on a good day.

Veggie Stripper

Veggie Stripper is a black drag king based in Newcastle and is the personification of organised chaos. Your friendly neighbourhood twink is known for his dramatic makeup and high-energy performance style.

Mimi

Michael 'Mimi' Loughran is a Non-Binary Performer/Practitioner based between Cumbria and Teesside. They are passionate about bridging the gap between Classical Theatre and Contemporary Stories representing the diverse world we live in today.
