Summer 1977. South Shields. Muhammad Ali is coming to town.

Set during the great boxer’s now legendary visit to The North East this searing new drama shows the effect that such a major event has on a mixed race family in South Shields. Written by one of contemporary theatre’s most regarded writers Ishy Din, this epic offering stirs up questions of identity, community and what each of us are truly fighting for.

See in 2025 with a play that hits hard!

Reviews

⭐⭐⭐⭐ ''A breathtaking and unflinching portrayal of resilience and hope... With gripping performances, sharp writing, and dynamic staging''
THEATRE AND TONIC

⭐⭐⭐⭐ 'Champion does much more than recount that historic visit...Confident and convincing performances...A little belter.'
THE REVIEWS HUB

'All three give utterly compelling performances in a powerful, thought-provoking and cleverly-produced play which has to be one of the best I've seen in ages.'
THE CHRONICLE

'A champion piece of writing as honed and toned as a boxer's torso and so beautifully presented and performed...a play that makes a case for empathy and understanding while entertaining hugely.'
CULTURED NORTH EAST

'Punchy new writing about our region's past...tight well paced drama featuring three talented actors...The vibrant centre of new writing, Live Theatre, has once again created an emotive drama that reflects the region.'
NORTH EAST THEATRE GUIDE

'Raw and inspiring...struck decisively in a remarkable piece riddled with questions of belonging, hope and a far greater, far more insidious fight than that which can be found within boxing.'
NARC

'Din has a sharp ear for dialogue...But for all its humour, it doesn't flinch from its darker themes.'
