We Need to Talk About America...
In the week of the US primaries when better to take a deep dive into complex and fascinating history and psychology of this troubled nation? Our mini season of readings this November will introduce audiences to some of the most adventurous, daring, important and - let's not forget - entertaining voices that have shaped contemporary American theatre (Or rather, "theater") over the last decades. Between them, these three masterpieces offer an unparalleled insight into the nation that will change your sense of what America means today.
First up is Topdog /Underdog by Suzan-Lori Parks
Thu 12 Nov, 7.30pm
Largely considered the first American masterpiece of the 21st century this electrifying two hander tells the tale of two African American brothers trying their best to survive in a world that has cast them out. One of them, Booth, has dreams of dazzling the public playing cards on the street and marrying his sweetheart. The other, Lincoln, has found work as an Abraham Lincoln impersonator in a shopping mall, inviting white people to re-enact his assassination for money. Could there be a finer metaphor for the death of the American dream?
First performed at the Royal Court theatre 25 years ago with cast including the rapper Mos Def this is razor sharp comedy and rapid fire tragedy that will hit you like a steam train and leave your heart in tatters.
Next is something that no one in the UK has heard before...

And finally one of the truly great plays of the last ten years
John by Annie Baker

Annie Baker is considered by many to be the US' most original and important playwright. And John is her masterwork.

Piano keys move and play all on their own. Rooms have their own bad moods. The ghosts of history is never far away. And, by the way, who is John?
A sort of ghost story, a sort of comedy, a sort of tragedy and a night at the theatre like no other. John is the play that will tell you more about modern America than you could ever have dreamt. A perfect way to spend a winter night.
