Inspired by the upcoming production of Our Friends in the North, Live Theatre is delighted to be partnering with the New Statesman to present this urgent panel conversation about the political and cultural place of the North East today and, crucially, for the future.
From pioneering feminist Mary Astell born in 1667 to Martin Luther King’s visit in 1967, The North East has long been a site of radical discourse. In a time of renewed focus on the North, how will this region harness its radical spirit to carve out the future that it wants?
- What is possible?
- What are the pitfalls?
- What does being truly radical look like today?
Chaired by New Statesman editor Tom McTague the discussion will bring together leading minds from the political and cultural sectors including North East Mayor Kim McGuinness, Labour Member of Parliament for Newcastle Central & West Constituency Dame Chi Onwurah MP, Middlesbrough playwright, Ishy Din, cultural commentator, Alex Niven (author of The North Will Rise Again).
