Artistic Director Joe Douglas takes a look at the new Sep 19 - Mar 20 Season

Our new season is bursting with Live Theatre’s own productions, shows created through our comprehensive Artist Development programme and some of the finest new plays touring the UK.

Coming to us direct from the Edinburgh Festival, we kick off with the smash-hit What Girls Are Made Of by Cora Bissett. A mixture of rock concert and nearly-pop star’s confessional, the show is the first of a string of shows hand-picked for you by Live Theatre. Book early for Build A Rocket, Trojan Horse and It’s True, It’s True, It’s True - we’ve been to Edinburgh so you don’t have to!

In September, our sell-out production of Clear White Light returns. This hard-hitting play - featuring the songs of Alan Hull of Lindisfarne, sung by Live Theatre favourite Charlie Hardwick - explores mental health and coincides with the 150th birthday of St Nick’s Hospital in Gosforth, where the play is set. Ray Laidlaw and Billy Mitchell (formerly of Lindisfarne) will return to the cast and also perform their own show, The Lindisfarne Story, on two Sunday evenings during the run.

In January, our co-production with The Paper Birds will have it’s full premiere before a UK tour. Ask Me Anything will appeal to anyone who is or has ever been a teenager and asks young people today what problems they face in the digital age. A funny, imaginative and moving tribute to youth, featuring the songs of folk singer Rosie Doonan.

One of our new Associate Artists, Mark Thomas, takes over Live Theatre for four days of shows, workshops and his irrepressible mix of comedy and politics. Please join us on Saturday 16 November, when we will be marking the first anniversary of the UN Special Rapporteur’s enquiry into poverty in the UK with Reading the Report.

Artist Development is written through Live Theatre like a stick of rock. Nowhere is this clearer than the fabulous Xmas party people of Bonnie & Fanny’s Christmas Spectacular and Mixtape Xmas. We have supported the artists involved in creating both shows and the all-female Sketch Comedy troupe Your Aunt Fanny started life at Live Youth Theatre. In the Spring we have Queer and Now, a week of new plays celebrating LGBTQ+ stories, and the return of our festival of up and coming talent, Elevator Festival.

Live Tales now offers sessions for young people under 7s and their families (see our new offer for young children, Live Tales Family Fables) as part of our commitment to help talent and creativity to develop and flourish at every level. On that note, our Open Undercroft extends to whenever you want to use it - if the theatre is open, the cosy space is yours to use, for work and play.

At Live Theatre we aim to entertain, make you feel comfy and give you a fresh take on the world around you, so grab a seat and come join us by the Quayside...

Theatre is Live!
