Summer Sounds

Live Theatre in Newcastle is bringing music lovers a super Summer of sounds with a sensational line up of concerts and new shows featuring songs, sounds and solos.

The first in a trio of gigs in June will see a chaotic queer punk explosion from Bitchfinder General on Thursday 20 June. A fixture on Newcastle’s DIY scene, BFG features hypnotic glitched-out synth and vocals from Jayne Dent (Me Lost Me), DIY Ceilidh’s Frankie Insley delivering shouty gothy madness and guitar alongside driving bass from DGA Collective’s Sarah Li and the merciless drum beats of James O’Coaimh (Bullion Train).

Wednesday 26 June sees special meeting of worlds when legendary poet Tom Pickard joins forces with much loved folk band Tarras. Tarras provide a unique blend of folk tradition subtly fused with a range of genres and a perfect complement to Pickard’s poetry.  

Master of the ballad, ground-breaking acoustic and electric-guitarist, folk innovator and highly influential artist Martin Carthy takes to the Live Theatre stage on Thursday 27 June.

Live Theatre’s first main production of the season The Bounds running from Thursday 16 May to Saturday 8 June will feature a haunting soundtrack from sound designer Matthew Tuckey with an original anthem composed by Jayne Dent aka Me Lost Me. This peat black comedy is a big belting drama about friendship, home, belonging, boundaries and the big game.

Live Theatre’s Associate Artist gobscure’s atmospheric and immersive multimedia installation yu have already survived from Thursday 23 May to Wednesday 5 June will be accompanied by a one off live performance by electronic musician Late Girl on Thursday 30 May.

On Friday 21 June The music of North East composer and chronicler of North East life, Eric Boswell will be celebrated in The Donkey, The Whippet and The Giant Leek, written and devised by Tom Kelly and Graeme Thompson. Starring Graeme Dancy and Valerie Reid this show will feature more than a dozen songs including comic favourite The Whippet and gorgeous ballad The Summer of Last Year.

Rounding up the musical interlude from Friday 12 to Sunday 14 July will be hard-hitting musical comedy We’re Not Going Back presented by Red Ladder Theatre Company and written by Boff Whalley, co-founder of renowned band Chumbawumba. Set in 1984 the everyday squabbles of three sisters collide with the Miners’ Strike, forcing them to question their lives, their relationships and family ties – all with humour, song and a six-pack of Babycham.
