New faces open the new season: Cast announced for explosive show We Are The Best!

Three young actors will make their professional stage debut in Live Theatre’s explosive new show, We Are The Best!, opening to audiences on Thursday 26 May 2022.

Charged with the anarchic spirit of the North East, We Are The Best! is a high energy ensemble comedy about finding your voice, the power of friendship and the joy of sticking two fingers up at a society that tries to define you.

Based on the film of the same name, this brand new stage adaptation has been written by North East playwright/performer Rebecca Glendenning (Bonnie and Fanny’s Christmas Spectacular, BonBons Cabaret, Sheltered) and will be directed by Live Theatre’s Artistic Director/Joint CEO, Jack McNamara.

Bethany Morris, Bridget Marumo and Elena Porter will be taking on the roles of Bobo, Klara and Hedwig respectively – three teenagers who, tired of oppression from their teachers, classmates and parents, form a punk band in 1980s Stockholm.

Bethany Morris, who trained at Saturday Stage School in Whitley Bay, most recently appeared as Dandini in Whitley Bay Pantomime Society’s production of Cinderella. She has also been seen in Tynemouth Priory Theatre’s production of Great Expectations, as well as both Aladdin and Dick Whittington with Whitley Bay Pantomime Society.

Bethany said: “I am thrilled to be playing Bobo in We Are The Best! This will be a great opening production as it influences self expression and shows a coming of age story about finding out who you are.”

Bridget Marumo was born in Botswana and has lived in the UK since she was five years old, training in a wide range of performance disciplines with Dance City, SA Performing Arts School and Circus Central. Although this is Bridget’s professional stage debut, she has already appeared on television and radio in several roles including with CBBC programmes Danny and Mick and The Dumping Ground. Bridget also recently played Bonnie in I Must Have Loved You for BBC Radio 4 – a play written by Michael Chaplin, with music from Sting (who also starred in the piece). Bridget has also previously appeared in Godspell for SA Performing Arts School, directed by Lee Proud.

Bridget said: "I am excited to be making my professional stage debut in We are the Best! at Live Theatre in Newcastle, the city I call home."

Elena Porter, a member of Stagecoach Washington, will be playing Hedwig. Elena is very excited to be making her professional debut at Live Theatre and says that she has had amazing support from her agent, performing arts teachers and her mum and dad, who she says have always encouraged and supported her aspirations.

The core cast will be joined by established actors Stacey Ghent, Beruce Khan and Anna Bolton, who all hail from the North East and are each making their Live Theatre debut.

We Are The Best! promises a boatload of nostalgia for anyone who grew up immersed in the alternative music of the 80s, while serving as a rallying cry for younger generations who are just finding their voice. A truly inter-generational event that will have audiences smiling, laughing and bonding over the power of music.

Live Theatre’s Teenagers Go Free offer will be available on selected dates during the run.

We Are The Best! from Thursday 26 May to Saturday 18 June promises a great night of theatre. Tickets on sale now priced at £10 to £24 with concessions from £6.  Find out more and book at https://www.live.org.uk/whats-on/we-are-best
