Fans - A Word from the Writer, Nina Berry

In 2013 my passion for theatre and my love of music propelled me into the arms of theatre company The Six Twenty, who I began regularly writing sketches for as part of their comedy, music, quiz show, Mixtape. Three years later in 2016 having just been awarded the Bridging the Gap bursary Melanie Rashbrooke, the The Six Twenty's artistic director, approached me with a concept for a part gig, part theatre show inspired by people’s love affair with music and naturally I jumped at the opportunity to come on board as the writer of the show! Armed with confessions from friends, family and music fans throughout the UK and a spotify playlist with everything from Beyoncé to The Beatles I set about writing and in September 2016 Fans was performed by our brilliant cast at a number of venues in the North East and received some really lovely feedback from audiences.

I’m absolutely delighted to be bringing the show to Live Theatre this Autumn before it goes on tour. It’s so brilliant to back rehearsing inside Live Theatre's four walls for the first time since The Terminal Velocity of Snowflakes took to the stage back in December 2017. A lot has happened since then. Firstly it was a dream come true to have signed with the London based agency Independent Talent in January of this year and in March/April time I took part in the Catalyst Project at The North Wall in Oxford, a two week residency for emerging writers and directors. In August myself and the fantastic Graeme Thompson spent a week at the National Theatre Studios working with a brilliant bunch of actors workshopping my new play Heat of Stars and I have also been working on an adaptation of the late Julia Darling’s beautiful novel The Taxi Driver’s Daughter which has been commissioned by Live Theatre.

It’s been two years since Fans first took to the stage and I’ve loved every minute of putting the band back together. I can’t wait to share this play with audiences again. Packed full of some of your favourite songs with original music by the incredible Chris Foley and performed by an insanely talented cast, I hope it makes you want to pick up that instrument you always promised you’d learn to play, I hope it reminds you of a band or artist that you once loved and I hope it transports you back to a time or a place that you thought you’d forgotten.
