Another entertaining Scratch night. The last piece Ballroom was stunning, it was beautifully delivered. Funny, captivating and full of emotion. One of the best Scratch night pieces I have ever seen.

Another excellent Short Cuts evening, thought provoking, sad and funny! The best value night out in Newcastle. We love the atmosphere and the friendly welcome from all the staff. Brilliant writing and fab acting as usual. Keep up the good work :-)

Amazing performances from all cast. Harsh subject matter but brilliantly and sympathetically played. Loved the similarity between the two Susans! Almost cried at end. Wonderful :)

The Girls From Poppyfield Close

24/06/2011

Enjoyed it! Thought act 1 was a little strained at times and a touch contrived, but it is difficult to set the scene and the characters did come through by the end. The second act simply flowed. Really enjoyed the performances from both the young female leads - especially the young Elle - and a good idea to go back in time by Alison Carr for the reveal. Well done

The Girls From Poppyfield Close

A brilliant mix of humour and sadness; I wasn't expecting the twist in the second act. Very well acted, with very convincing characters - I really sympathised with the girls and disliked the manipulating male characters.

I thought the play had great potential. I was tired when I arrived but the reading awoke and riveted me, not wanting to miss a word. Dark humour and maybe more darkness to come. Would love to see the rest, wherever it goes

Girls On The Verge

22/10/2010

Both actresses gave excellent, convincing performances on the night, in what must be a particularly daunting format - the monologue as a work-in-progress. Paula Penman was hilarious and Eva Quinn actually moved me to tears. This was partly due to her performance, but also due to the very subtle treatment of the subject matter by the writer Paddy Campbell. Everything about the story was both painfully comical and incredibly sad, without any clumsiness in the writing. I look forward to seeing more from this very talented young writer in future.

New Plays from the 2010 Writers' Group - Different Stages

10/03/2010

I attended last nights 'new writing' event. I am a regular at such events as my daughter contributes. In my view the four plays you showcased were four of the best pieces of new writing that have been shown in this format at Live over the last few years. The pieces were original and very well performed and a credit to those involved.
Thank you for an excellent night.

New Plays from the 2010 Writers' Group - Different Stages

10/03/2010

I just had to contact you to say how lucky we are to have such talented writers, and performers, in the region. I have attended several script-in-hand performances over the years and have to say this was the best yet. All four plays were of a high standard and most enjoyable. It almost seems wrong to select a favourite but mine was Alison Carr's Tittle, Tattle, Tattletale.  It had real emotional depth and insight, particularly in the character of Jackie, the wife. Congratulations too to Lee Mattinson - who knew a cheese omelette could provide so much comedy!

A Walk On Part

10/11/2011

First time at the Live Theatre - loved the building and the intimacy of the space. The performances were excellent, especially that of the Chris Mullin character - a real tour de force!! The production was simple but very effective and the two hours just flew by. I was enthralled! I loved the whole experience and look forward to more visits - just sorry it has taken me so long to discover this place. Even enjoyed the filter coffee which is not usually to my taste.

I really enjoyed this production as I am a local person and Labour Party member. Fantastic acting and particularly a tour de force from John Hodgkinson as Chris Mullin. Hardly surprising it is going to London next. Excellent venue and atmosphere.

A Walk On Park

01/06/2011

A highly entertaining piece of theatre. As good as Yes Minister in exposing the workings of government. The man who played Chris Mullin gave an amazing performance. How did he remember all that dialogue with few prompts from fellow cast members? Well done to writer, director and cast!

Sue Bevan

A Walk On Part

31/05/2011

A work of genius. The play is brilliantly derived from Chris Mullin's vibrant diaries and does them justice and more. The performances of all the actors were excellent: that of the lead actor as Chris Mullin was a tour de force. The play deserves to go big!

John Cowley

A Walk on Part

21/05/2011

A marvelllous adaptation by Mike Chaplin of Chris Mullin's important diaries. The writing spanned a number of important political years and was packed with people, events, laughter and despair. This was played out at a cracking speed and the cast, and especially the lead actor, made the difficult task of telling a political story accessible and highly enjoyable. Well worth the journey to Newcastle. A sparklling and memorable theatrical event.

Frances and Keith Griffiths

A Walk On Part

21/05/2011

Attended the matinee - this was a 24 carat performance - all the actors were great! changing accents admirably to suit the characters - thought John Hodgkinson as Chris Mullin was outstanding - not a prompt - not lost for a word over the two hours the play lasted.

Mr. J.E.HURST

A Walk On Part/From Page to Stage

21/05/2011

An excellent production with an outstanding cast, particularly John Hodgkinson - a real tour de force. I have read the first volume of the diaries and enjoyed it very much - this performance gives a different perspective, but complements the written word brilliantly. The after-show discussion was very interesting - what came over to me was the camaraderie between the three paticipants and the mutual respect for the craft of writing and directing.

Building Tour

04/05/2011

The visit to the theatre was excellent and very well presented by Carole. She is obviously enthusiastic both about Newcastle and the theatre. Everyone in our party commented on how friendly and competent she was, answering any questions we had and if she didn't know the answer was more than happy to try and find it out. We have attended performances at the theatre but will obviously feel more at home now we have seen more of the workings.

Faith & Cold Reading

11/03/2011

This evening's play, Faith & Cold Reading, was fantastic. The performances from Stephen Tomkinson and Laura Norton were brilliant. It was only my second visit to Live Theatre and I found the experience a very pleasurable one. The play was funny, sad and thought provoking, but most of all fantastic writing and great delivery. Thank you all very much.

Louise Wright

Faith & Cold Reading

09/03/2011

I was completely immersed in the play from the outset, and loved the dark humour and menacing atmosphere. Stephen Tompkinson was a revelation - terrifying, unpredictable and horribly violent, yet disturbingly sympathetic and engaging. The presence of a "star" didn't detract from some brilliant ensemble playing, and all of the performances were superb. I still don't know what was really going on - the music really added to the effect. So, an excellent show, combined with the usual warm and intimate Live ambience.

Faith & Cold Reading

04/03/2011

Absolutely loved this original, multi-layered gripping piece of theatre. Superbly written, directed and the cast were wonderful - especially Stephen Tompkinson who was vile and repulsive but at the same time not wholly evil or completely unattractive - this, I found disturbing in itself and very thought provoking.

Wonderful entertainment in a terrific, intimate venue. Live Theatre is a treasure, especially when supported by productions of this quality. The play offered something different and was wonderfully scripted, staged and performed. Stephen Tomkinson's performance was chillingly brilliant. It truly is a delight to see a big-name star being prepared to put his heart & soul into a regional production at a small venue. Thank you

Alan Clark

Faith & Cold Reading

24/02/2011

Powerful, thought provoking drama interlaced with very funny dark humour. The play deals with a subject that has fascinated mankind throughout the ages. It could be billed as an X rated version of the Yvette Fielding T.V. series " Ghost Hunting with" , i.e. Ghost Hunting with Ronnie Kray. The whole cast deserve special praise. Stephen Tompkinson's performance was a true tour de force. The Live Theatre venue is special and you feel as if you are being regally entertained in the comfort of your own home. It's a diamond in the North East's crown.

John Colbert

Faith & Cold Reading

17/02/2011

We thought it was a great coup, the Live Theatre attracting an actor of such quality as Stephen Tompkinson and thoroughly enjoyed the play. Although Stephen was brilliant in his role, we thought he was well supported by the other 3 actors especially local girl Laura Norton. As well as the performance on stage we must congratulate the writer and director as well as all at the Live Theatre for putting on a wonderful play. Very well done to you all

John Lyon

Faith & Cold Reading

16/02/2011

Live theatre remains one of best venues both for bar and seating. Would dispute those national critics who say the play struggles with balance between drama and comedy. This was an excellent production which never lost the attention of the audience. Had no problem with the "strong language" but it was at the top end of strong and should have been emphasised.

Alan Tailford

Faith & Cold Reading

16/02/2011

Was totally 'blown away' by Stephen Tompkinsons portrayal of 'Freddie The Suit'. Admittedly having booked tickets simply to see him, l was "gobsmacked" at the quality of the performance, not just by Mr Tompkinson, but by the cast as a whole. l was totally engaged from the beginning to the end of the play, each character bringing an intensity to the storyline which transferred to the audience immediately. Would easily watch it again. 'Brilliant' !

What a roller-coaster of a performance! We experienced such laughter, then within a few minutes raw tear jerking emotion, an exhausting but exhilarating ride.I doubt that there were few people in the audience that couldn't identify with some aspects of the family's problems taking care of an elderly relative. Excellent.

Good with People

15/10/2010

George Perrin’s skill in amplifying a 45 minute play beyond its time confines or limits inherent in being a 2-hander is to introduce a third aspect broader and more all-encompassing than anything on stage - the past. Good with People used the past to highlight how some scars never properly heal, how the impact of some events is perpetual, how the past must always effect the future. Blythe Duff played anguished Helen, clipped in speech, tight and restricted in body language. The Carrey-esque Andrew Scott-Ramsay was Evan, the returner, the felon but also the redeemer. Great theatre: sparse but full.

Jacquelin Watson

Good With People

15/10/2010

Despite our best efforts, we have never managed to see a Play, A Pie & A Pint at Òran Mór during visits to Glasgow, so we were very pleased to have the opportunity to see Good with People at Live Theatre today. We thoroughly enjoyed the play which was tense and atmospheric and we felt that it was perfect for the intimate main theatre. We hope that Live Theatre becomes a second home for A Pie & A Pint and that it returns each year. The pies were also very tasty!

Bob and Barbara Wilson

Good With People

14/10/2010

Initial impression was this was going to be as interesting as a night in a Travel Lodge...but with nicer food. However, the as story elements were teased out by the two actors my interest was engaged more and more fully. Attention slipped from the pint of Stella and the remnant of a chicken pie to wondering just what had happened to the heroines' son and realisation dawned that that the hero was, in fact, an anti-hero atoning for past sins. I would hesitate to call it a pleasant 45 minute diversion, but it was certainly an engaging performance.

Aidan Ruff

Good with People

14/10/2010

A great concept. I like the idea of short plays like this, can really pack a punch, say a lot in a short time. The confines of the carpet limited the range of images, though, and also meant some playing in profile. Powerful expressions of anger, but more tenderness, guilt, pathos would have given greater depth of characterisation. Excellent use of simple staging, props and costume. Musical links, perhaps ? Very good eye contact throughout, linked with (mostly) physical distance. And sublime command of the text. Thank you both actors. Great to see Blythe Duff live.

Seeing Double

14/10/2010

The two plays by new writers on Thursday were very good and most thought provoking. I particularly liked the twists in Reality by Ali Muriel, very clever and gripping. Well done RSC for putting time and effort into helping new writers along. Friendly atmosphere in the theatre too, most welcoming.

Katherine Polson

Good with People

13/10/2010

At first, she is the dominant person, comments flying like machine gun bursts, but as he pulls memories back, supposedly with effort, he defends himself. After each scene, they change ends like boxers returning to their stools. What happened to her son? This apparently key issue recedes. The aggressor has taken refuge in helping others abroad, and the mother now uses it as an excuse for her failing relationships, yet they take some comfort from one another. An edgey well acted performance, keeping the audience off balance and wanting more.

Graham Pilkington

Calais

08/10/2010

Everything ship shape on the surface, as we expect from Nelson. Emma faces up to her extreme poverty with élan, contrasting with Horatio’s anxiety and introspection, and Jacques’ convincing performance completes an impressive acting trio. De Angelis has a good year for comedy, her dialogue is sparse and well judged, and Tamara Harvey’s direction is efficient. Unfortunately I find it difficult to believe that Nelson’s well connected daughter would have accompanied her disgraced mother to her demise in Calais Also Horatio’s revelation that Emma Hamilton was her birth mother lacked credibility. Otherwise a really good afternoon.

David Griffiths

Calais

08/10/2010

Imagine the scene, you’re a writer working on an idea for a 45-minute radio play based around the death of Lady Hamilton, Nelson’s infamous lover. At the same time Paines Plough are looking to commission a 45-minute play for their Play, A Pie and A Pint season. Serendiptity or what! Comforably the best of the Play, Pie and a Pint events so far but if this doesn't turn up on Radio 4's afternoon play slot in 2015, the 200th anniversary of Emma Hamilton's death, I'll actually eat my vegetarian pie.

Congratulations to Lynsey Rogers who wins a bottle of Prosecco for this review:

I felt engrossed in the dilemma of care workers Francis and Loretta, wondering where their emotions would take them. Tempted to claim their patient's posthumous windfall of £500 (with just the small matter of his dead body occupying the bathroom) the women grapple with their morals, jumping rapidly between repulsiveness and likeability. These characters, excited by the prospect of Barcelona and a spree at Primark, are authentic. The action is well-paced, providing humour without compromising the emotional integrity. Overall, a fantastic piece of writing, providing the perfect introduction to the play, pie and a pint scheme. Fancy winning a bottle of Fizz? Find out more.

Brilliantly written and brilliantly acted. The star was Amy McAllister, as Fanny. Her mimicry of different voices and accents was superb. The singing was so good that the actors could almost have been miming.

Terrific - a beautifully realised production with a stunning design and lovely performances.

My wife and I thought The Pitman Painters was the best performance we had seen at Live Theatre - but we enjoyed A Northern Odyssey just as much. Shelagh Stephenson crafted a fascinating and (in view of the scant detail about Winslow Homer) an informative and credible piece of theatre - with authentic dialogue and, at times, beautiful language. Lighting, costumes and music were all superb and the whole cast combined magnificently to provide an overwhelming effect. As usual theatre staff were most welcoming and helpful.

So impressed on many accounts. Congratulations to all concerned in a wonderfully fresh and vigorous production of a fascinating drama of ideas and the human condition. If I had been able to stay in Newcastle longer I would have gone to see A Northern Odyssey again and again!

The performance captured the essence of the 'artist' and reality of life for the Cullercoats Fishing Community. Enjoyed the mix of acting and singing. Amazing production on such a small stage and found the use of the projected images very appropriate. Great night, great performance, great theatre.

Tremendous play. It had everything. When the girls mirrored the paintings on the backdrop I felt myself go prickly all over! And the dancing ... wow ... it was an effort staying put in my seat. A wonderful, wonderful evening.

I saw the show last Friday and enjoyed it greatly. It is a fine thing to have done; and done so well. It deserves awareness and great audiences. A strong and credible storyline is animated by a first class cast, with direction, music and design all contributing to the revelation: people in tension and collision; persevering with the hardnesses of life; certainties rocked; tragedies borne; infused with zest and humour. Well done to all.

A tremendous first night, touching on so many things from the 'selfishness' of the artist through to social cohesion and unity all true of the North East. Well done!

A very interesting story of a little known part of our history. Well written and superbly acted with appropriate music, again well sung. Impressive and thought provoking.

I thoroughly enjoyed the performance. I found that the narration style of the first piece worked well as I could visualise the various scenes of the central character's past that were being described. The acting was convincing and impressive as the performers switched rapidly from one scenario to another. The two monologues were brilliantly done. They were both very gripping and moving, and the performances were of a professional standard. A very good night out

Brought my 15 year old daughter who wasn't keen on coming out to see this, but wow, did she enjoy it! A play relevant to young people her age. As an adult who doesn't use social media - I was thoroughly entertained!

What an excellent night - seven talented actors performing challenging monologues as if they were born to do it. The writing was sharp, witty and very funny and it was one of the best nights at the theatre I’ve had in ages. Everyone involved should be congratulated – class act!

This show was an excellent event . The young people were very talented and every credit due to Phil, who teaches them. It was a lively enthusiastic performance. The young people who had written their own songs show great promise. I enjoyed every minute of it, and proves that not all young people are bad. This comment is from a 70 year old grandmother. Keep up the good work.

This excellent performance by Paul Duckworth gave an 'everyman' view of his Scouse/Irish working class roots. The script allowed past and present to meld effortlessly. Through humour and pathos, Kenny's life unfolded. A lump in the throat was swallowed by tears of laughter! Fidelity was the watchword here. Fidelity to his wife, his friends, his politics; but, most of all, his team. Duckworth has the facial expressions of Mr Bean (Minty), the wry humour of James Nesbitt and the frenetic energy of Peter Capaldi. He owned the stage for two halves. Alan Bennett, eat your heart out!!

Local and visiting thespians could learn a lot from the dedication to craft displayed by the kids (ages 17-23) performing with Live Youth Theatre...It portrays the adolescent dramas and respective ambitions of a group of school children on a fieldtrip to an iconic sculpture (The Angel of the North) in the northeast of England...Aided by a visit from an angel who takes up residence in the sculpture, the kids squash petty feuds, confess hidden attractions and come clean about the pressures in their home lives that shape their public personas. The ensemble works well together, moving briskly through some fairly complex blocking and transitions. The performances are strong and surprisingly unself-conscious. Director Amy Golding has evidently guided them well, and the result of their efforts is winsome and engaging.
